The kinds of casino bonus you will see in Canada

Most casino bonus offers in Canada fall into a handful of types. The names vary from site to site, but the mechanics are the same, and knowing them makes any offer easier to judge.

Match bonus

The casino adds bonus funds in proportion to your deposit, up to a stated maximum. It is the most common welcome offer. The bonus part carries wagering conditions; your own deposit usually does not, though some terms tie the two together.

Free spins

A set of spins on named slots, paid for by the casino. Winnings usually arrive as bonus funds with their own wagering and deadline. Our free spins guide covers them in detail.

No deposit bonus

A small bonus or a few spins given without a deposit, usually just for registering. They are rare and tightly capped; see our no deposit bonus guide.

Reload bonus

A match bonus for existing players on later deposits. Same mechanics as a welcome match, usually smaller, and often limited to certain days.

Cashback

A share of net losses over a period returned to you, sometimes as cash and sometimes as bonus funds with wagering. Read which one it is before you count on it.

Loyalty rewards

Points or status earned through play that can be exchanged for rewards. Networks such as Casino Rewards share one loyalty scheme across several casinos. Loyalty rewards can carry their own conditions too.

How to read wagering terms

The headline of an offer tells you the most it could be worth. The terms tell you what it is likely to be worth. Here is how to read the clauses that matter, using letters rather than numbers so the logic works for any offer.

The wagering multiple. If a bonus of B must be wagered N times, you need to place bets totalling N × B before the bonus can be withdrawn. Some offers apply the multiple to the bonus only; others apply it to the deposit plus the bonus, which makes the total much larger. Read which one applies.

Which balance is used first. "Bonus funds first" means your bets come out of the bonus before your own money. "Real balance first" means your own deposit is used first, and the bonus only comes into play once your cash is spent. With real balance first, you can often withdraw your own money before touching the bonus, but withdrawing may cancel the bonus.

Game contribution. Not every game counts fully towards wagering. Slots often count in full; table games and live dealer games may count for a fraction or nothing. If you prefer blackjack, a bonus may take far longer to clear than the headline suggests.

Maximum bet. Many terms set a maximum stake per spin or hand while a bonus is active. Going over it can void the bonus and any winnings from it.

Expiry. Bonuses and free-spin winnings have deadlines, often different ones. Unmet wagering at the deadline usually means the bonus and its winnings are removed.

Maximum conversion. A cap on how much bonus money can become real, withdrawable money. If the cap is a multiple of the bonus, a big win while playing with the bonus may be cut down to that cap.

Excluded payment methods. Some deposit methods do not qualify for an offer. If you deposit with one of them, you get no bonus.

Deposit method exclusions are common, and they are easy to miss. The published welcome terms for all four featured brands state: Excluded Skrill and Neteller deposits. Safer bonus play

A bonus is not free money. It is a way to make your deposit last longer under conditions that favour the casino, and it can encourage you to play for longer than you planned in order to clear wagering. Set your budget before you look at the offer, not after, and decide in advance whether you are willing to play through the wagering at all. Declining a bonus is always an option.
