What free spins are
A free spin is a round on a slot machine that the casino pays for. The casino sets the game, and usually the value of each spin, and you get to play it without staking your own balance. That is the whole of what "free" means: the stake is free. What you win is a separate question, governed by the terms.
Free spins are popular with casinos because they are easy to understand and cheap to offer: the casino chooses the game and the spin value, and the terms decide how much of any win you can keep.
Where free spins come from
Welcome offers. Many welcome packages pair a match bonus with a set of free spins on a named slot. This is the most common place to find them in Canada.
Promotions. Casinos run free-spin promotions for existing players, often on new games or on particular days.
In-game features. Many slots have their own free-spin rounds, triggered by scatter symbols during normal play. These are part of the game's maths and have nothing to do with a bonus; winnings from them are ordinary winnings. Our online slots guide explains how these features work.
How free spin winnings are usually treated
Winnings from bonus free spins usually go into a bonus balance rather than your cash balance. To turn them into withdrawable money you normally have to wager them a set number of times within a deadline. Free-spin winnings often have a shorter deadline than other bonus funds.
Many offers also have a maximum-conversion clause: a cap on how much bonus money can become real money. If you win well above the cap, the excess is removed when the bonus converts. And, as with any bonus, requesting a withdrawal while free-spin winnings are still in play can cancel them.
None of that makes free spins worthless. It means their value is small and conditional, and the terms decide how much it is.

Free spins no deposit in Canada
"Free spins no deposit" means spins given without any deposit, usually just for creating an account. They are rarer than deposit-based spins, and they tend to come with tight caps on what you can withdraw and a requirement to verify your identity first.
None of the brands we currently list publishes a free spins no deposit offer for Canada. If you see one advertised elsewhere, read the terms on the casino's own site before you register. Our no deposit bonus guide explains what to check.
Reading free spin terms
When you look at any free-spins offer, find these five things in the terms: which game the spins are for; how long you have to use the spins; how many times winnings must be wagered and by when; whether there is a cap on what the winnings can become; and whether your deposit method qualifies. If any of the five is missing, ask support before you claim.
For how wagering works in general, see our guide to casino bonuses in Canada.
Finally, think about whether the offer suits how you play. Free spins tie you to one slot for a while and then to wagering on the winnings. If you would rather play table games, or you do not want a deadline hanging over your balance, declining the offer is a perfectly sensible choice.
Frequently asked questions
What are free spins?
Free spins are rounds on a slot that the casino pays for. You do not stake your own money on them, but winnings from them usually arrive as bonus funds with wagering conditions and a deadline.
Can I withdraw free spins winnings?
Usually only after meeting the wagering requirement in the terms, and often only up to a maximum-conversion cap. The exact rules are in each operator's terms.
Which games can I use free spins on?
Free spins are almost always tied to specific slots named in the offer. You cannot move them to another game.
Are free spins no deposit offers available in Canada?
They exist, but none of the brands we list publishes one for Canada. See our no deposit bonus guide for how they usually work.
Do free spins expire?
Yes. Both the spins and any winnings from them usually have deadlines, which are often shorter than for other bonus funds. Check the terms as soon as you claim them.
